The Potential for Electrical Shock from your Laser Printer

Today's laser printers include many built in safety features and circuit protection to help guard against potential electric shock. However, even in light of these safety features, there is still a real risk for potential high voltage build-up on rollers, wires and various metal contacts. Therefore it is recommended not to touch any of these electrical components in order to avoid potential painful electrical shock and damage to the laser printer.

Cleaning and Servicing the HP 2600n Toner Cartridge

Never should a regular home vacuum cleaner be used to clean the printer or toner cartridges. It is possible for the static discharge from charged toner particles to ignite dust in the vacuum cleaner bag, or even possibly create a small explosion within the vacuum cleaner. This happens because the toner particles are designed with electrostatic properties. They are known to develop static-electric charges when they rub against other objects or particles. You could possibly damage the vacuum cleaner or start a fire by vacuuming the toner. Also, the particles in toner are so tiny that they can slip right through the filters in conventional home vacuum cleaners, and be blown through the motor and back into the room. The most effective way to clean toner residue is to use a cold damp cloth. Toner will adhere to surfaces when heated during normal laser printer usage.

Other than a standard home vacuum cleaner being used when toner spills or leaks into a laser printer, a certified ESD-safe or Electrostatic Discharge Safe vacuum should be used. High efficiency or HEPA filters and electrically conductive hoses allow for safe clean-ups and maintenance.

Most clothing can be easily cleaned from toner with a standard wash. Due to the fact that toner has a low melting point, washing and rinsing in cold water is recommended. Use of hot or warm water will cause the toner to permanently stain the garment. Washing twice will increase the chances that the toner soiled clothing will become clean. Please make certain that no toner residue remains on the clothing when drying or ironing. This may result in a permanent stain.

The Risks and Dangers of Ozone Exposure

In the toner cartridge area if the printer, small amounts of nitrogen and oxygen are produced due to the high voltage corona discharge. This forms ozone and nitrogen oxides. Carbon filters that are used in large photocopiers and laser printers break down nitrogen oxides and ozone to reduce these harmful pollutants. Regrettably, some ozone usually escapes laser printers that have ozone filters and smaller printers don't even employ filters. If a laser printer is operated for a long amount of time in a poorly ventilated area, these gases can build up to high levels.

Possible Ozone Repertory Health Risks

Recent analysis conducted in Australia suggest that sub-micrometer particles could cause respiratory disease from exposure. According to a study conducted in Japan in 2006, researchers found that laser printers produce styrene, xylenes and of course ozone. It was also determined in the same study that ink-jet printers discharge pentanol.

Steps to replace the toner cartridges

  1. Open front door.
  2. Remove the used toner cartridge.
  3. Remove the new toner cartridge from the protective bag and place the old toner into the bag for recycling.
  4. Firmly hold the toner cartridge by the blue handles and gently rock the cartridge from side to side. This will distribute the toner evenly. CAUTION:  DON’T TOUCH THE SURFACE OF THE ROLLER OR SHUTTER!
  5. Gently remove the shipping tape and orange shipping locks for the cartridge.
  6. Using the handles on the cartridge, align the toner cartridge with the tracks on the inside of the printer and insert until firmly seated.
  7. Close the front door. After a few seconds, the control panel should display  Ready. PLEASE NOTE: IF ANY OF THE TONER CARTRIDGES ARE IN THE WRONG SLOT OR IF WRONG CARTRIDGE IS USED,  ONE OF THE FOLLOWING MESSAGES WILL BE DESPLAYED ON THE CONTROL PANEL: Incorrect Black, Incorrect Cyan, Incorrect Magenta or Incorrect Yellow.
  8. The toner cartridge installation is now complete. Place the old cartridge into the shipping box and check for recycling instructions inside. Note: Whenever you replace a black toner cartridge, a cleaning page will be printed automatically. This helps to prevent speckling of the front or back of the printed page.
