Should I use Hewlett-Packard’s OEM toner cartridge or is after market OK?
In 2007 Hewlett-Packard commissioned QualityLogic to study the reliability of the page quality for HP Color LaserJet toner cartridges for the CP3505 Color LaserJet Printer. This test compared five remanufactured brands that are sold as a substitute to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) brand. This study compared the quality and usability of those pages.
What was the overall Result?
The overall result clearly showed that HP LaserJet Toner Cartridges by far outperformed remanufactured color toner cartridges.
On average, the HP LaserJet toner cartridges printed 98.3% of the sample pages as acceptable quality compared the five remanufactured brand at 74.7% according to the study. The five remanufactured toner cartridge brands tested were: RhinoTec, Nukote, PTi, Verbatim and Elite Image.
Overview of the Test
The page quality was determined by analyzing a sample output that was taken from each of the brands in the study. QualityLogic conducted a psychometric study in order to create a page quality scale that was calibrated business laser printing user behavior. QualityLogic also hired an independent market research group that recruited a demographic cross-section of color laser users. Based on certain uses, the study participants provided feedback on page quality levels. This information was used to create a scale by QualityLogic. QL inspectors used this scale to sort sample pages into these categories:
- Limited uses: Not for external distribution
- Limited use: Not for distribution
- Unusable
- All uses, including external distribution
The results for the five remanufactured brands tested were compiled by averaging each category into a overall percentage.
How to Replace Your New HP 2600n Toner Cartridges
When a toner cartridge for the HP 2600n is nearing its useful life, a message will display on the user control panel. The printer will still function normally until a message is displayed instructing the user to replace the cartridge.
The HP LaserJet 2600n uses four different colors for printing: black (K), cyan (C), magenta (M) and yellow (Y).
Its time to replace a toner cartridge when the control panel displays one of the following messages: replace black cartridge, replace yellow cartridge, replace cyan cartridge and replace magenta cartridge.
Steps to replace the toner cartridge
- Open front door.
- Remove the used toner cartridge.
- Remove the new toner cartridge from the protective bag and place the old toner into the bag for recycling.
- Firmly hold the toner cartridge by the blue handles and gently rock the cartridge from side to side. This will distribute the toner evenly. CAUTION: DON’T TOUCH THE SURFACE OF THE ROLLER OR SHUTTER!
- Gently remove the shipping tape and orange shipping locks for the cartridge.
- Using the handles on the cartridge, align the toner cartridge with the tracks on the inside of the printer and insert until firmly seated.
- Close the front door. After a few seconds, the control panel should display Ready. PLEASE NOTE: IF ANY OF THE TONER CARTRIDGES ARE IN THE WRONG SLOT OR IF WRONG CARTRIDGE IS USED, ONE OF THE FOLLOWING MESSAGES WILL BE DESPLAYED ON THE CONTROL PANEL: Incorrect Black, Incorrect Cyan, Incorrect Magenta or Incorrect Yellow.
- The toner cartridge installation is now complete. Place the old cartridge into the shipping box and check for recycling instructions inside. Note: Whenever you replace a black toner cartridge, a cleaning page will be printed automatically. This helps to prevent speckling of the front or back of the printed page.
